FLY OR DRIVE

Namibia is unlike any other country on earth!

There are two major ways to travel through Namibia: travelling by light aircraft by hopping in to a series of desert camps and lodges, or with fully equipped private safari vehicle (or a combination of the two) with your own expert guide or naturalist. Flying has the obvious advantage of speed and occasional spectacular aerial views of the scenery. A Namibian fly-in safari in a small plane will take you from one desert scenic wonder to another: the incredibly colored rock strata, endless dunes, towering mountains, deep gorges, aridity and the apparent absence of lifemakes it seem like visiting a strange deserted planet.

Travelling by private vehicle takes longer but enables you to appreciate the changing scenery slowly revealing orange dunes followed by great gravel plains and dramatic gorges; to enjoy fascinating side trips en route. All explained and interpreted by your expert guide.

VENUS? NO, SIMPLY EARTH!

The ultimate safari is to the Skeleton Coast National Park where spending four days in one of the remotest places of the globe.  This is a land of multicolored wind sculpted dunes, of desert adapted wildlife, giant clay castles and hundreds of miles of hauntingly desolate shoreline where shipwrecked mariners knew they had no hope of survival.

Huge Atlantic breakers crash against a “burning shore” littered with whale carcasses and ship planking while inland, desert elephant wander with infinite slowness, blown and sculpted by the persistent breeze. 

Some people do live here, though. Inland you can meet a tiny community of Himba people who have for centuries survived by oases with their goats which provide almost everything they possess. The women cover themselves in ochre colored henna. Their dignified beauty and complete absence of possessions makes them appropriate custodians of this strange and hauntingly beautiful land. 

It takes two hours flying to reach the Skeleton Coast National Park one of the richest and most spectacularly beautiful desert regions on earth.

A specialist desert guide takes you in an exploration vehicle like a tiny insect crawling across unending yellow, red and coffee colored dunes sculpted into swirling shapes by the oceanic wind. Then in the distance an intensely white shoreline shimmers like a mirage against the blue Atlantic.

And finally enjoy an extraordinary good buffet lunch seated in deck chairs on the beach sensibly close to a colony of thousands of Cape fur seals.

THE PLACE OF MIRAGES

The word Etosha can be translated to ‘place of mirages’, ‘land of dry water’, or ‘great white place’ – depending who you are speaking to.

The Etosha National Park is situated in the Kunene Region of northwest Namibia.

It was established in 1907 when Namibia was a German colony known as South West Africa. At the time the park covered an area of 38, 500 square miles but due to political changes over the years it now covers a protected area of great significance, that is quarter its original size.

The Park is mainly flat and dominated by a large shimmering salt pan which measures 80 miles in length and 31 miles in width. 12 million years ago is was a shallow lake as fed by the Kunene River. Climatic and tectonic changes have since lowered the water levels and now the pan only holds water for a short time every year.

It is one of the best places to spot cheetah and black rhino as well as many rare antelope species like Damara dik dik, roan antelope and black faced impala. The birdlife is prolific with a count of 340 species which include a blend of savannah, wetland and semi-desert birds. In the summer months it is teeming with flamingos and pelicans and the perennial springs attract a large variety of game and birdlife during the months of March to November – before the start of the wet season when the landscape is covered in yellow blooms.

This is a photographer’s paradise – especially in the early morning and late afternoon when they go through an amazing range of color changes from orange to pink, purple and deep blue, forming mirages from the distorting heat – the perfect backdrop for capturing those iconic images of oryx meandering across the salt pans.

The sensational rain clouds also form an interesting contrast to the dry and hostile landscape. The Luxury lodges and comfortable camps with attentive personal, world class service have carefully designed seating areas that overlook the numerous waterholes which attract an array of wildlife including impala, zebra, gemsbok, wildebeest and herds of elephants and lion prides.

When we speak about safari people generally think about morning drives through the African Bush…but have you ever thought about a safari by night? What about a safari when the sun sets?

This is completely different and the bush is totally transformed; a whole variety of nocturnal animals come out when the sun goes down.

At night, your senses are magnified; your hearing is keener, and you can expect to have a completely different adventure. This is an exciting experience.

When night falls you optimize your odds to see the big five: the elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros…but you also have the chance to see nocturnal animals such as the pangolin, aardwolf, honey badger and more.

The Etosha National Park of Namibia has many waterholes with fountains and natural springs, which are the best spots to observe animals drawn out of hiding to drink at the water’s edge.

AMAZING DAMARALAND

Damaraland, named after the Damara people who inhabit it, is one of the most scenic areas of Namibia filled with fascinating places to visit for those seeking a more cultural experience. Lying between the Skeleton Coast to the West and the Etosha National Park to the East, Damaraland is a fantastic self-drive destination that offers some of the most unique landscapes and vistas in the world. Famed for its beautiful sunsets, the region is also a photographers dream.

Home to the largest population of free-ranging Rhino in the world and the famous desert elephants, Damaraland also boasts places of significant anthropological interest. The Brandberg is Namibia’s highest mountain and home to the famous “White Lady” bushman painting whilst Twyfelfontein is a wonderful rocky outcrop with thousands of Bushman engravings.

Spitzkoppe is a pointed mountain that is a place of great mystery to the ancient San people. All this rugged exploration can be rewarded by a massage at one of the world class spas in the area, most of them overlooking the untouched landscape.

The Petrified Forest, millions of years old, makes for an exciting daytrip taking in the weird and wonderful contortions of the aged trees and The Vingerklip (finger rock) is a towering finger of limestone that rises 35m above its base – a remnant of a plateau formed over 15 million years ago.

Northern Damaraland has the highest concentration of games in the region, with grassy hills dotted amongst the acacia trees throughout the plateau whilst volcanic peaks formed by volcanic activity break the endless plains in Southern Damaraland.

Furthermore, the Reserve has been awarded for its efforts in terms of sky conservation, and has recently been named Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve by the Dark-Sky International Association.

Beyond the stars, the Namib Rand Nature Reserve is also distinctive in its desert landscape’s diversity. Virtually all facets of the Namib are represented, from mountains plunging down into endless grassy plains, interspersed by red vegetated dunes, creating a living tapestry of colors and shapes.
